Established in 2006 by a collective of 50 farmers hailing from five distinct villages nestled within the Bener Meriah district of the Aceh Region, Permata Gayo emerged amidst a backdrop of conflict and uncertainty. Their unified vision: to forge a cooperative capable of fostering economic stability among farmers, fostering transparency throughout the supply chain, and nurturing the land through the cultivation of coffee. Presently, Permata Gayo stands as a testament to their perseverance, boasting a membership of 2,122 individuals, of which 452 are women-owned farms.
Dedicated to empowerment, Permata Gayo conducts comprehensive training initiatives covering coffee cultivation, processing techniques, and coffee cupping to ensure quality standards. Beyond the realm of coffee, the cooperative extends its reach, implementing food security projects and actively supporting educational, sporting, and artistic endeavors within the community.
Comprising predominantly of smallholder farmers, each owning approximately 2-5 hectares of land, Permata Gayo members uphold sustainable agricultural practices. Central to their approach is the use of compost, meticulously crafted from a blend of livestock manure, green waste, and the skins of ripe cherries harvested from their fields. Notably, the coffee processed from this lot is meticulously crafted using the honey or pulped natural method. Through this method, fresh coffee cherries are de-pulped yet left to dry without washing, yielding a cup replete with sweet, fruity notes reminiscent of cherries, apples, and berries.
All coffees are roasted to order and shipped on Tuesday. Free shipping on orders $40 and up!
